First thanks for being here!  I've been really frustrated with adobe and the whole serious magic purchase then all of the activation problems on vista.

Serious magic rocks!  Although my lighting usually does not but that's another issue.

Anyways I downloaded the latest activation utility (2009) from adobe today to unlock my ULTRA2 and Visual Communicator 2 products on my new Vista computer tried it and it did not work.  Although through some trial and error I thought I'd give you the steps on vista that do work.

1. download the zip file from adobe.

2. unzip the program SMActivate.exe

3. right mouse button click on SMActivate.exe and set it to "run as administrator"

4. then select the product you want to activate and chose ok.

It works great but without documentation I got frustrated as it does not find any products on your computer, unless you run as administrator.

Thanks for all of your work in getting adobe to make this utility.  I tried to talk to technical support and get some sort of update to Ultra2 but they said there was no update path and I needed to buy the master suite at $1500+ or so.

Glad to hear you were able to get it to work. I have been using it on Vista for a long time now and works just fine.  Grin

Sadly that seems to be a stock answer from them on problems - I had a situation recently where I had Premiere Pro 1.5 happilly installed, but I was running out of HD space so imaged the drive to a bigger one.

On boot up and trying to run PP a splash screen appeared and told me changes had been made to the system and that I needed to re-authenticate the install - OK no problem I thought, but the thing just locked up!

Holding for ages to support was a waste of time as their answer was it was a known issue with RAID cards and PP 1.5 and upgrade.... - no thanks! - removed PP and re-installed it and luckily it worked - but it could have been so different!

Their "support" is a joke!

Thanks for posting this!

I am excited because this is the first time I have been able to run Ultra 1 with an Ultra 2 upgrade on my vista machine which is my primary computer... until now I have had to rely on a secondary XP machine that I only kept around so I could use Ultra 2.

I was able to install mine successfully... but not without its problems. Following your tips and all I still had to uninstall and reinstall everyting to get a proper installation.

Even then I got a missing DLL error which I resolved by finding the dll online and putting it in my windows 32 directory.

Now I have not run any keying and rendering tests on my new vista installation yet... so I am crossing my fingers that all is well so I can stick to one computer and retire the xp box.
